Résumé

This book explores marine algal biopolymers as versatile building blocks for advanced functional materials. It examines the molecular architecture and structure–property relationships of alginates, carrageenans, agar-based polymers, fucoidans, ulvans, and algal cellulose, highlighting how composition, molecular weight, charge, and processing influence material performance. The book discusses modification, crosslinking, advanced manufacturing, and the development of films, hydrogels, fibers, membranes, composites, and responsive systems. Particular attention is given to functional performance, reproducibility, sustainability, circular manufacturing, biorefinery concepts, scale-up, environmental and techno-economic considerations, and regulatory challenges. It ultimately provides a framework for translating marine biomass into reproducible, high-performance, and sustainable materials.
