Résumé

Optimizing the management of Guillain-Barré syndrome is a medical academic book devoted to the diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic management of Guillain-Barré syndrome. It first defines GBS as an acute autoimmune polyradiculoneuritis affecting peripheral nerves and spinal roots, then presents its epidemiology, age and sex distribution, infectious triggers, geographical variations and paediatric specificities. The book then explains the pathophysiological mechanisms, including molecular mimicry, anti-ganglioside antibodies, complement activation, macrophage involvement, demyelinating forms and axonal damage. The clinical chapters describe the typical presentation, motor weakness, sensory symptoms, reflex abnormalities, pain, dysautonomia, diagnostic criteria and common pitfalls. Paraclinical assessment is discussed through electrophysiology, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, biological tests and imaging, followed by differential diagnosis and the chronological phases of the disease. The book also covers prognosis, functional scores, long-term outcomes, and major variants such as Miller Fisher syndrome, Bickerstaff encephalitis, AMAN, AMSAN and pharyngo-cervico-brachial forms. The final sections focus on treatment, including intravenous immunoglobulins, plasma exchange, intensive care, respiratory monitoring, prevention of complications, pain and fatigue management, rehabilitation, pregnancy, paediatric care and structured post-GBS follow-up. The tone is scientific, practical and educational, intended for clinicians, neurologists, medical students and rehabilitation teams.
