Résumé

This research monograph provides an integrated, multi-scale synthesis of the Mediterranean Basin, linking its deep geodynamic history with present-day ecological patterns and future environmental challenges. It examines tectonic evolution, the Messinian Salinity Crisis, Mediterranean-type climate dynamics, hydrology, soils, terrestrial and wetland ecoregions, floristic diversity, mycorrhizal symbioses, and marine–terrestrial linkages. Particular attention is given to North African and Algerian wetland networks and their ecological functions. The book also evaluates accelerating pressures from climate change, land-use transformation, urbanization, agriculture, and hydrological stress. By combining spatial analysis with the DPSIR framework, it proposes adaptive governance, Nature-based Solutions, and integrated conservation planning to strengthen biodiversity protection, ecological resilience, and sustainable management across Mediterranean landscapes.
