Abstract

Algeria faces severe and persistent water stress, driven by limited renewable resources, demographic growth, climate variability and increasing demand. This book examines the country’s water governance through the combined perspectives of hydraulic engineering, public policy and institutional management. It analyses water-stress indicators, conventional and non-conventional resources, seawater desalination, wastewater reuse, infrastructure, regulation, water policing, human capital, climate adaptation and the water–energy–food nexus. Particular attention is given to structural reforms required to strengthen water sovereignty and improve the efficiency and resilience of the sector. Drawing on quantitative projections to 2040, the author discusses regulatory reform, technological options, artificial intelligence, circular-economy approaches and the institutional changes needed to support sustainable water management in Algeria. The book is intended for policymakers, engineers, researchers, academics, students and water-sector professionals.
