Abstract

Designed for third-year undergraduate students in biochemistry, this course examines how cellular organization determines molecular function. It introduces eukaryotic compartmentalization and the composition, architecture, and transport properties of biological membranes. Subsequent chapters address protein and lipid biosynthesis, intracellular trafficking, the cytoskeleton, mitochondrial energy conversion, protein quality control, and lysosomal degradation. The text also explains glycosylation of proteins and lipids, receptor-mediated signal transduction, second messengers, and major kinase pathways. Its final chapter considers cellular dysfunction associated with altered signaling and protein sorting. Review questions accompany the chapters to consolidate understanding of the mechanisms governing cell function.
