Abstract

This scientific monograph examines the blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus off Oran, Algeria, within the wider context of deep-water fisheries in the south-western Mediterranean. It describes the regional fishing fleet, trawling practices, regulatory framework and environmental setting, then reviews the species' taxonomy, anatomy, ecology and reproductive cycle. Using commercial landings sampled in 2005, the book analyses sex ratio, maturity, spawning indicators, growth, length-weight relationships and population parameters. Comparisons with other Mediterranean populations support a synthesis of management implications, research priorities and data needs for a still poorly documented resource along the southern margin of the basin.
